GB vs GiB: why your drive looks smaller

Why a 1 TB drive shows 931 GB

The same 1 TB bar cut two ways: into ten 100 GB pieces, and into 9.31 pieces of 100 GiB, each 7.4 % bigger Sold as 1 TB: ten blocks of 100 GB (10¹¹ bytes) 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 Windows: the same bytes in 100 GiB blocks (2³⁰ × 100 bytes) 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 100 31 = 931.3 GiB, shown as “931 GB” same length: no bytes missing

Two counting systems share the same names. The SI prefixes (kilo, mega, giga, tera) mean powers of 1,000, as they do for metres and grams. A terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Drive makers, network speeds, phone makers, macOS and iOS count this way.

Computer memory is built in powers of two, so early software counted a "kilobyte" as 1,024 bytes. In 1998 the IEC gave those binary units their own names: kibibyte (KiB), mebibyte (MiB), gibibyte (GiB), tebibyte (TiB). Windows still counts in binary units and labels them KB, MB, GB, TB.

So the 1,000,000,000,000 bytes of a "1 TB" drive divided by 1,073,741,824 bytes per GiB is 931.32. Windows shows "931 GB". Nothing is lost: it is the same number of bytes, counted with a bigger unit. The gap grows with each prefix: 2.4 % at kilo, 4.9 % at mega, 7.4 % at giga, 10 % at tera.

Memory (RAM) is the exception that keeps the confusion alive: a "16 GB" memory stick really is 16 GiB, because memory chips come in powers of two.
