What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

8Mbps = 1 MB/s

Mbps is megabits per second; MB/s is megabytes per second, eight times bigger.

A small b means bits, a capital B means bytes, and one byte is eight bits. Internet plans quote megabits per second; download windows show megabytes per second.

The arithmetic

  1. 1 byte = 8 bits
  2. 1 MB/s = 1,000,000 bytes/s × 8 = 8,000,000 bits/s = 8 Mbps
  3. So 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s, before overhead
